
Section 9 extends from the Ochre Pits to Ormiston Gorge and is one of the longest sections on the Larapinta Trail. This section requires walkers to carry enough water for 2 days as there is no tank water provided and no reliable surface water exists along the way. For walkers prepared to carry a heavier pack with sufficient drinking water this section provides truly spectacular views. Highlights of this section include views of Ormiston Pound, Mt Giles and Alice Valley, and viewing Black-footed Rock-wallabies and Euros around to Ormiston Gorge.
Section 10 extends from Ormiston Gorge to the Finke River at Glen Helen. The terrain is suitable for walkers of average fitness used to walking long distances. This section is one of the shortest and most popular sections of the Larapinta Trail, meandering between Ormiston Gorge and Glen Helen Resort for approximately 10 kilometres (4 -5hrs). Highlights of this section include walking in the Finke River, one of the oldest rivers in the world, and relaxing at Glen Helen Resort after a good days walk.
Section 11 extends from Glen Helen to Redbank Gorge, a distance of 29km. Allow 2 days for this section, which is suitable for experienced, well-prepared hikers with good fitness. The only reliable water sources on this section are at Glen Helen, Rocky Bar Gap and Redbank Gorge. Highlights of this section include Rocky Bar Gap and Redbank Gorge.
Section 12 extends from Redbank Gorge to Mt Sonder. This is the final section of the Larapinta Trail and is the only section which starts and finishes at the same location. The Trail ascends Mt Sonder and ends at a cairn on the summit, offering fantastic views at every step of the way. On this section hikers can choose to walk as much or as little as they like. Highlights of this section include the wildflowers of Mountain Hakea in September in October, arriving at the summit of Mt Sonder, and views of Tnorala (Gosse Bluff) from Mt Sonder.
