Section 5 extends from Birthday Waterhole to Hugh Gorge. This is a 16 km overnight section of the Trail and is only suitable for well-prepared, experienced walkers with good levels of general fitness. The terrain is challenging in this section of the Trail, which passes through Spencer Gorge, follows the spine of Razorback Ridge and then descends down narrow Linear Valley to the Hugh River junction. This section follows natural watercourses, and it may be necessary to negotiate pools of water within Hugh Gorge.
Section 6 extends from Hugh Gorge to Ellery Creek. This is a 31.2 km overnight section of the Larapinta Trail, suitable only for experienced and well-prepared walkers with a good level of fitness and stamina as some long distances are involved. This section crosses the Alice Valley from Hugh Gorge in the Chewings Range, to Ellery Creek Big Hole in the Heavitree Range, and represents one of the longest and most difficult sections of the Larapinta Trail.
Section 7 extends from Ellery Creek to Serpentine Gorge and is a relatively short section covering 13.8 kilometres (5.5hrs). This section is however graded as hard and like many other sections of the Trail is exposed to the elements. As a day walk option this section is often overlooked, making it appealing for those who enjoy uninterrupted walking. Highlights of this section include the gorge scenery and refreshing water at Ellery Creek Big Hole, and many spectacular examples of Central Australian geology.
Section 8 extends from Serpentine Gorge to the Ochre Pits via Inarlanga Pass. This section is graded as hard and presents a challenging one day walk which, after a steep climb up Counts Point, offers stunning panoramic views of the West MacDonnell Ranges and surrounding Central Australian desert country. The walk is well worth the effort and rewards walkers with some of the best views along the Larapinta Trail. This section can be extended by 6.3km with a walk to the Ochre Pits via the Arrernte walk. Highlights of this section include the Counts Point views, views of Mt Sonder in the distance, Inarlanga Pass and ridgeline views over the Alice Valley.
